Today I brought along a special friend of mine as I share The Word this morning. My friend ’s name is Wally. He is my best friend. I talk to him all the time, you know, sometimes it gets lonely here when no youths come by! I talk to him everyday, I share my joy, sorrow, anger, excitement and every single happening in life. He is a really good listener. He is my “bestest friend”, my BFF (Best Friend Forever) they call it. I like to hug him, and show him how much he means to me. (Sorry Kat, but he is going to take the over your position soon). Oh and you know what? I heard that Teddy bears fight monsters too. Here is a short clip of what they do when we are sleeping.

Wow… Let’s give Wally a round of applause as I invite him down the stage. Aren’t they cool? They are so fluffy and cute and adorable and sweet and huggable and soft and such a good listener and they protect us too. Does this depiction of Wally remind us of someone?

Oh Jesus is my best friend, I talk to Him when I am sad, happy, angry. I love Him so so much. I just want to give Jesus a hug. He is all- good, all-powerful, King of kings, Lord of Lords, and best of all, He is my best-est of friend. But let me tell you a secret, “I don’t think he is able to solve my problems, I pray to him so that I can feel better…” We love Him (we really do), We worship Him, honor Him, but when problem arise we put Jesus into our precious little safe and try to face the problem ourselves. I feel that many a times we fail to acknowledge who He really is.

1. Jesus is the Lord of all lords and King of all kings.

“Together they will go to war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will defeat them because he is Lord of all lords and King of all kings. And his called and chosen and faithful ones will be with him.”

The Lamb of God; Jesus, stands victorious because He is the Lord of all Lord and King of all kings.

Furthermore, in

“Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.”

All authority in heaven and on earth belongs to Him and He has the control and the power over them. That He has the authority to prosper us, He has the authority to heal us, He has the authority to change our trying circumstances, He has the authority against my problem and your problem, He has the authority to change my life and to change yours. For nothing is impossible with God, and you wouldn’t expect Jesus to break a sweat from doing so.

Church, yes, Jesus is our best friend but we need to recognize that He is also our LORD and Saviour not our teddy bear to hug and kiss at night. Our God is ferocious.

To have an understanding of how ferocious our God is 凶猛的神

Let us take a look at a picture of our Sun in our solar planet. It is just a red ball of raging fire The visible part of the sun is about 5,500 degrees Celsius 摄氏度, not very hot, (it takes about just 983 degrees Celsius for 2.5 hours to turn me and you into ashes) The Sun’s visible surface is just about 5 times of it. While temperatures in the core reach more than 15 million 百万摄氏度, Celsius, driven by nuclear reactions 核反应. According to NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) (美国航空航天局), one would need to explode 100 billion tons 在每一秒,轰炸100亿屯的咋药才能于太阳的能量相比 of dynamite every second to match the energy produced by the sun.

Now, let’s look at how big the Sun in comparison with earth. It is said that, about one million 百万 Earths could fit inside the sun. Is our Sun the biggest star out there? No, in fact our Sun is the 4th smallest star that we can see with our own eyes. Let’s look at how our Sun in comparison with other huge stars. See how small our Sun is? What’s the point in all this? Let us turn to

Psalms 33:6
“By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.”

Raging balls of fire that are so much bigger than our all-powerful Sun comes out from the mouth of God. Our God is not a nerdy weak fellow, who couldn’t save Himself on that cross; Our God is big, strong, and all-powerful! That’s who He is and that’s who we are worshipping.

And this morning I want share an important attribute of God that we need to understand.
Let us turn our bible to

Isaiah 6:1 – 7.
In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called to another and said:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory!”
4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!”

6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

2 其 上 有 撒 拉 弗 侍 立 , 各 有 六 个 翅 膀 : 用 两 个 翅 膀 遮 脸 , 两 个 翅 膀 遮 脚 , 两 个 翅 膀 飞 翔 ;

Of all the things about God, one of the hardest for us to focus on and perhaps the most difficult is His holiness. Holiness 圣 洁 is one of those uncomfortable attributes 属性 because it reminds us how much we are unlike Him. And this holiness of God is the standard of righteousness to which the whole universe will be conformed. God does not conform 顺应 to any standard created by others. He is the STANDARD 标杆. Therefore His creation must conform to His standard.

Holiness is the centrepiece of God’s attributes. Of all the things God is, at the center of His being is His holiness. God’s holiness unlocks the door to understanding and making sense out of everything else about Him. This attribute infiltrates 属性渗入 all the other attributes. His love is holy love. His all-knowing is holy all-knowing. His all-presence is holy all-presence. Everything about God has been infiltrated by this defining attribute of God called holiness. Therefore, if we want to know God we must understand the idea of God’s holiness.

When we look at God’s holiness, there are two elements to it. The first is the idea of greatness. One of the meanings of holiness is the idea of being “set apart.” That God is totally above and beyond us, He is in a class of His own.

In Exodus 15:8 – 11 (出 埃 及 記 15:8-11)
“At the blast of your nostrils the waters piled up;
the floods stood up in a heap;
the deeps congealed in the heart of the sea.
9 The enemy said, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake,
I will divide the spoil, my desire shall have its fill of them.
I will draw my sword; my hand shall destroy them.’
10 You blew with your wind; the sea covered them;
they sank like lead in the mighty waters.
11 “Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods?
Who is like you, majestic in holiness,
awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?”

Who is like Him? Who can compare to His greatness! Let me tell you something that you already know, “nothing is impossible with God.” Absolutely nothing. No problems, troubles, situation, circumstance is impossible with our God. In the bible, we know that there was a righteous man name Job 约 伯 who went through a really really hard time and the he was reaching the climax of his agony, the Lord spoke in Job 38. Turn your bible with me…

Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said:
2 “Who is this that obscures my plans
with words without knowledge?
3 Brace yourself like a man;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.
4 “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?
Tell me, if you understand.
5 Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!
Who stretched a measuring line across it?
6 On what were its footings set,
or who laid its cornerstone—
7 while the morning stars sang together
and all the angels shouted for joy?
8 “Who shut up the sea behind doors
when it burst forth from the womb,
9 when I made the clouds its garment
and wrapped it in thick darkness,
10 when I fixed limits for it
and set its doors and bars in place,
11 when I said, ‘This far you may come and no farther;
here is where your proud waves halt’?
12 “Have you ever given orders to the morning,
or shown the dawn its place,
13 that it might take the earth by the edges
and shake the wicked out of it?
14 The earth takes shape like clay under a seal;
its features stand out like those of a garment.
15 The wicked are denied their light,
and their upraised arm is broken.
16 “Have you journeyed to the springs of the sea
or walked in the recesses of the deep?
17 Have the gates of death been shown to you?
Have you seen the gates of the deepest darkness?
18 Have you comprehended the vast expanses of the earth?
Tell me, if you know all this.
19 “What is the way to the abode of light?
And where does darkness reside?
20 Can you take them to their places?
Do you know the paths to their dwellings?
21 Surely you know, for you were already born!
You have lived so many years!
22 “Have you entered the storehouses of the snow
or seen the storehouses of the hail,
23 which I reserve for times of trouble,
for days of war and battle?
24 What is the way to the place where the lightning is dispersed,
or the place where the east winds are scattered over the earth?
25 Who cuts a channel for the torrents of rain,
and a path for the thunderstorm,
26 to water a land where no one lives,
an uninhabited desert,
27 to satisfy a desolate wasteland
and make it sprout with grass?
28 Does the rain have a father?
Who fathers the drops of dew?
29 From whose womb comes the ice?
Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens
30 when the waters become hard as stone,
when the surface of the deep is frozen?
31 “Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades?
Can you loosen Orion’s belt?
32 Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons
or lead out the Bear with its cubs?
33 Do you know the laws of the heavens?
Can you set up God’s dominion over the earth?

and it goes on and on and on and on…

There is a profound difference between Him and those He has created. Our God is greater than anyone else, He is grand, He is majestic. He is awesome, Our God is awesome.

The second aspect of holiness (and the one we generally think of first) is the idea of purity 纯洁. God is good. He does what is right and never does what is wrong. God is unstained by, and uncompromising with sin. God does not “bend a little” when it comes to wrong-doing. God always acts in a righteous manner because His nature is holiness. He is both great and good. There is no such thing as grey in the bible. Only white and black, yes and no. It is the very reason why Jesus had to come to died for us. Because all of us have sinned, and it runs in our blood. And Romans 6:23a tells us that

For the wages of sin is death.

The bible also tells us that

Job 34:12
Surely, God will not act wickedly, And the Almighty will not pervert justice.

Hence God cannot say, “ok la, because I love you very very very very very much. I will close a eye and let you pass.” That wouldn’t happen, because by doing so will make God a bias and unjust God. So to fit his nature of holiness, he needs to destroy sin. Sin needs to be eradicate and by doing so would means that we have to die for our own sins. But because the fact that God love us very very very very very much, His showed His grace by sending Jesus to take our place.

2 Corinthians 5:21
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

And because we believe in Jesus, we become the righteousness of God. That now in God’s eyes we are righteous, you and me are righteous before God.

Our God is perfect just and at the same time He is perfect love. By saying this, I do not mean that God is 50% just 公正 and 50% merciful 慈爱 to made up 100%. We need to understand that God is 100% Just and 100% merciful which made up to 100%. You might say, wait a minute that doesn’t adds up right. In God’s view, math means nothing to Him. It does not make sense to us, but it makes perfect sense to Him.

Now knowing this, in

Ephesians 2:4 – 7
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

But can only happen when we too want to be holy. Leviticus 利未记 tells us to be Holy, for He is Holy (Leviticus 11:44)

When we worship a God who is Holy, we as His children have to be holy too. Being holy simply means setting ourselves apart from the rest. That we are consecrated for the Lord. We must behave differently form the world. How then do we set ourselves apart? Let’s us understand that from the read of His Word,

In Colossians 3:1 – 17 (歌 羅 西 書 3:1-17)
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
– So we are to set our minds on heavenly things, whatever that we do, we consider God first.

3For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
– We have to die to ourselves sinful selves. Then also may we be resurrected in glory with Him when Jesus comes back.

5Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.b 7You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices
– Again, we have to put to death whatever belongs to our earthly nature.
Sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, greed, anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from our lips, do not lie
– Because the wrath of God is coming really soon.

10and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all.
– Hence we have to put on a new self, a Christ-like self.

12Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
– We have to clothe ourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience, bear with each other, forgive one another, and over all these virtues put on love.

And with this last portion of the passage…

15Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
– In word or in deed, do it all in the name of our Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

There are two important things that I want everyone to know. Our God is Holy. He is so Holy that if a sinner stands before will be consumed totally by his Holiness. That God is not your friendly best friend next door. He is ferocious.

In one of C.S Lewis book, The lion, the witch, and the Wardrobe.

A little girl Susan asked Mr. Beaver about how safe is Aslan the great lion (who by way is representation of Jesus in the book). And Mr. Beaver responded “Who said anything about safe? ‘of course He is not safe” He is a lion! “But He is good, He is the King, I tell you.”
We need to come before the Lord with reverence and awe We need to start changing our mindset and showing our King the respect He deserves.

Our God is Holy.

And the second important thing is that our holy God requires us to live a holy life.

– We need so set ourselves apart from the world.
– We need to die to our earthly self
– We need to start living a Christ-centre life 以基督为中心
– We need to practice the fruit of the Spirit and be fruitful in it.
– We need to die to sin
– Charles Spurgeon said this “If you do not die to sin, you shall sin for sin. If you do not slay sin, sin will slay you.”

Truly, Church let us this afternoon commit ourselves to living a holy live before the Lord. “Be Holy for I am Holy” says the Lord.
